Characters: Tony DiNozzo/Ziva David
Summary: Some hurts are meant to be chased
Notes: Written for Ryalin1's birthday. Sorry, this is so late sweetie, but I had to retire some bunnies and tame a dragon to get this one written. I hope you like it.
Tony DiNozzo cautiously peeked around the stack of pallets just in time to see their suspect run through the open warehouse door.
Turning back to his injured partner he said “I’m going in”
She acknowledged with a quick nod and a whispered “Be careful”
Tony would not have been more surprised if she had said the world was ending in the next five seconds. Ziva David did not say things like that. Ever.
Ziva registering his surprise and hesitancy asked worriedly “What is it? What is wrong?”
“Nothing. It’s just that you have never told me to be careful before”
Relieved that was the only thing causing his hesitancy; she smirked at him and said “Well, never out loud”
Flashing the famous DiNozzo grin, he turned and ran after their suspect.
Just as Tony was finishing up his report on the arrest, Gibbs walked into the bullpen carrying the ever present cup of coffee and asked “Heard from Ziver?”
Tony chuckled “The ER docs are kicking her out. The bullet was a through and through, missed the bone and the artery. She will be good as new in a few days.”
The cup paused halfway to Gibb’s mouth as he asked “You picking her up?”
Nodding, Tony stapled the report and tossed it casually into Gibb’s in box “She asked me to bring the extra set of clothes from her locker. “
Picking up his backpack and Ziva’s duffle he said “See ya tomorrow Boss”
Gibbs watched as his senior agent practically ran to the elevator and murmured to himself “Damn it Dinozzo”
Ziva emerged from her bedroom wearing a faded pair of NCIS sweats and trying to towel dry her hair with one hand to find Tony rummaging around her kitchen.
“I thought you left”
“I did. But, only to go to the kosher deli to pick up some soup, I know you haven’t eaten since lunch.”
Ziva laughed as her stomach growled at the aroma of the soup “I could eat”
After helping Ziva get comfortable on the couch, Tony returned with a bowl of soup and a glass of water.
“Where’s your pain pills? It’s best to take them when you eat”
Ziva blew on a spoonful of soup and took a bite before answering “I declined them. I do not like to take pills. They make me feel druggy”
“I think you mean groggy and we are alike when it comes to that”
Seeing Ziva’s small grin, he asked “What?”
“It is just weird hearing you say we are alike, because we are nothing alike”
Tony felt his heart skip a beat. That was not what he wanted to hear. He almost reverted to his old method of deflection and humor, but at the last second decided to plow forward, now was just as good a time as any.
“Maybe we aren’t exactly alike Ziva, but I see us as two sides of the same coin. Complimentary is better than sameness.”
“Tony, I did not mean…”
He interrupted her, because he needed to say what was on his mind before he chickened out yet again.
Motioning between them he said “I think it’s time we acknowledged whatever this thing is we have between us and act on it”
Sitting down her bowl, Ziva turned to Tony and he could see tears forming in her eyes when she said “I will only hurt you”
Reaching out and softly touching her face, he replied “In case you haven’t noticed Ziva, I have been chasing that particular hurt for a very long time. “
“You will hurt me”
Pulling her into an embrace Tony whispered into her ear “Take that chance Ziva. Give in to this. Give in to… me.”
Raising her face to his and barely grazing his lips with her own, Ziva David answered “I already have.”
