 As a "owner" of hundreds of ebooks - this is scary.... especially since we really own nothing even though we may have spent hundreds of dollars....

Ah, that story again. This is why so many people who buy/rent ebooks use Calibre and a variety of plugins to keep backup copies of their books on either hard discs or USB drives. Calibre even has a way to strip DRM - though we aren't supposed to talk about that - so you can even more books from one reading device to another.

What's more worrisome is when a company or book seller closes down and you lose all access to your books because of DRM then this situation, but then I went into buying ebooks knowing that if I wanted to 'own' my books, I needed a way to backup the ones I purchased outside the 'cloud storage' that came with the device.
