Title: Lucky Break
Characters: Tony DiNozzo, Ray Cruz (with mentions of Ziva David)
Spoilers: Slight for 8.20 Two Faced
Disclaimer: Still not mine
Summary: Luck – it’s a matter of perspective
Tony was surprised to see Ray Cruz drinking alone at the bar. He wondered briefly if it would be rude to just ignore him, but decided that if Ray was going to be a part of Ziva’s life, then he should at least be cordial to him – even if it killed him.
Tony walked over to the bar and greeted Ray.
Ray looked up and smiled in the way that Ziva probley found endearing, but Tony found infuriating.
“Hello Tony, I was beginning to think you weren’t going to make it”
Tony was taken aback “You were expecting me? I didn’t even know I was coming here until thirty minutes ago”
Ray just smiled that smile again and asked “Buy you a drink?”
Tony reluctantly sat beside Ray and ordered a beer thinking I’m doing this for Ziva
Neither man said anything for a few minutes and Tony was deciding that this was definitely a mistake when Ray spoke up “It’s over between me and Ziva”
That was news to Tony, but it would explain Ziva’s foul mood for the day. It was all he could do to reign in his anger at Ray for breaking for heart.
Ray must have sensed Tony’s thoughts because he continued “She broke it off with me. I love her and wanted this to work out”
“Lying to her was not the way to go about it”
“I know that. Look, I know you two are close. Watch out for her ok? I just want her to be happy and safe”
Tony almost felt sorry for the guy (almost), so he just nodded his acknowledgment that he would always have her back – with or without Ray Cruz asking for it.
Ray finished his drink and stood. As he was walking out he looked back at Tony and said “Just my bad luck to finally find the woman of my dreams and the job screws it up” and then he walked out of the bar.
Tony sat at the bar and finished his drink while pondering luck and came to the conclusion – luck is a matter of perspective; one man’s bad luck is another man’s fortune.
