dragonheart: (Plan B)

As some of you know, a couple of weeks ago I had an unfortunate event involving my grill.  After said event, we just never got around to recovering the grill.

Over the past couple of weeks I have spied the grill cover hanging on the deck rail and have thought to myself - someone really needs to put the cover back on the grill.  Of course in my mind someone equates to either my husband or my son.  Needless to say, it never got covered.

As it is a really nice day out, I decided to take a little yard stroll and check on the progress of my gardens and gauge the amount of weeding that I would be faced with this weekend.  Well I spy the grill cover and decide since someone hasn't replaced it yet, I might as well do it.

I don't for the life of me know why I raised the lid before covering it, but I did and imagine my surprise to see a bird's nest with 3 teeny little eggs in it.  Right on the grill grating - pretty as you please.

So of course, right away, my thoughts start churning:
* this puts the grill out of commission for the next several weeks (how long does it take for the eggs to hatch and the babies leave?) Ok, no worries, I can live with that, me and grill aren't exactly on speaking terms at the moment - my husband and son will just have to deal....
*can't cover the grill as mama bird needs an in/out

And then, it hits me - like a 2 x 4....

I have 40 people coming over in two weeks for a backyard cookout/celebration in honor of my son's high school graduation.

Now what ?  I can't stand the thought of throwing out the nest and eggs and I can't move the nest - that amounts to pretty much the same thing and I really don't relish the thought of buying another grill as I just paid a small fortune for the stainless steel monstrosity currently serving as a bird incubator.

Ideas? Thoughts? Help.....

I'm sure there must be places that rent grills? After all, what do organizations do when they have big events in public spaces? Cart the darned things from their offices? I think not.

Check with your local parks & rec office - they can probably steer you in the right direction.

And, kudos to you for wanting to keep mama & babies safe! Post some pics, please???? Pretty-please???

Rent a grill for the BBQ or borrow a neighbors! You know the alternative!

My neighbor told me that the eggs probley won't hatch as they will get too hot in the grill, keeping my fingers crossed that is not the case.

Ooh, I hope not! And I'm going to pretend I didn't read [livejournal.com profile] heartundone's comment about cooked eggs! *squirms*

My thoughts would be either: 1. Rent-A-Center 2. Neighbor (obviously the cheaper option) 3. If #2 isn't an option you might want to compare the cost of renting a grill with simply getting the party catered. Usually a good BBQ place or a place with good fajitas (though I'm not sure how the Mexican restaurants are in KY) is perfect for a big get together. Hope everything else goes according to plan!

I go with rent or borrow - you can't move the eggs and mummy bird.

I hope all goes well with the cookout/celebration.

We need more birds in this world! Moaaar! That's absolutely cute though.

Forgive me, I'm still half asleep. I need to wake up.
