I have officially withdrawn from the [community profile] casestory  bigbang challenge.  I thought I would feel disappointed once I made it offical, but I only feel relief, which leads me to believe it was the right decision.

I will continue to work on my story, but at my pace and without deadline pressure.  Perhaps,it will give me something to work on over the summer hiatus (after we finish talking about the finale and speculating about the premiere for season 10).

I have 5 out of 10 chapters written.  The first 5 chapters set up the case and introduced new characters.  I am at the meat and potatoes part of the story - our team putting the pieces together, solving the case and working through some personal stuff (you know there has to be a shippy element to the story!)

As far as [community profile] inkingitout  goes - I am 31% to goal.  A little behind - I had hoped to be 40% by first of May.  But I am not discouraged - I am hoping that the next three episodes give me fodder for a fic or two.  I have a couple of ideas kicking around, but nothing has solidified in my head yet.

I actually had a Game of Thrones fic that I was considering, but after reading George R. R. Martin's stance on fanfic and his expressed wish that his characters not be used in fanfic, I am going to let it go.

Sticking with the NCIS fandom for writing inspiration - and if Bellasario and Company ever officially come out with a stance against fanfic - please don't tell me, because this really is a case of ignorance is bliss.

I think fans would revolt if they told us we couldn't write fanfiction. I see why some writers don't like it .... but personally if I'm ever a published writer I would love it. I think it's flattering to have peopke enjoy something so much that they want to keep the magic of what you created alive.

Is there an "official" way to withdraw? All I did was post a comment in response to the latest [community profile] casestory post announcing that I was withdrawing. I didn't see anything in the rules that said how you were supposed to do it.

Now I'm wondering if I AM officially withdrawn or not?

Basically if you don't turn in a rough draft, it's assumed your out. Some people post on the rough draft post or a check-in post ... but it basically comes down to if you don't turn in a draft it's understood that you're done. No one chases you down for drafts or anything. I'm sure someone saw it, butit's likely they won't respond since the drop rate it so high it isn't worth their time.

The bangs I've dropped I've never been contacted confirming that I dropped.

For this I figure when the draft reminder goes up I'll post there.

Fans still write their fanfiction but base it on the Television series and not the books. There are details that are changed between the televised version and the novel enough to consider it its own universe and not GRRM's ridiculous refusal for fanfic. LJ comms are around for itand FFnet recognizes the television series for fanfic (as they do also recognize those authors who also do not want fanfic such as Anne Rice and doesn't include fic for her novels.)

Personally I don't agree with George RR Martin's (and others) stance on fanfic and if a plot sehlat containing his characters comes my way, I write it. I am not out there making profit on my fanfic and I could see him being upset if I or anyone else was, but that isn't the case.

I admire folks who take the stance you do, but the thing that really irks the bullshit out of me is the ones who stand there and say 'Oh, I wouldn't use his characters for fanfic, but I feel the HBO Game of Thrones series is fair game'.... I mean wtf? George RR Martin didn't sell his intellectual property to HBO and, in fact, he himself has written one or two of the episodes that will be shown.

It makes me want to jump back into communities who hold that stance and see if they make a ruling that fanfic can't be based on the episodes Martin produced.

From what I've seen so far it's only writers that seem to have a quite aggressive stance on fanfic, never saw it happen with a TV show. And you know what, in a way I get it, because a writer often puts a LOT of him- or herself into a story and its characters. I, personally, wouldn't like to see any original characters of mine in fanfic, either (if I ever were to be published), because with fictional characters it's mostly all from one person's mind.

TV and movies are a team effort - it's not just the author who brings a character to life, it's also the directors, the editing, the camera crew and wardrobe department and, of course, the actors. A lot of what we see has already been interpreted and warped by at least a dozen different people and their views of the character. It's... I dunno, I just get why TV crews rarely complain about fanfic and why authors sometimes do, you know?

I get why authors feel that way, but I just think that they should understand that people love their books so much they just want to be a part of it. It just makes me think that they have forgotten what it feels like to be a fan of something that they themselves didn't create. Just my thoughts.
