dragonheart: (Fictional World)

I woke up this morning with an idea for an original fic, the whole thing just kind of came to me in one fell swoop - I even have the title.

I have never written an original fic before and would love to have someone to bounce around the concept with.

I have always written for established characters - so the fleshing out of characters is new for me - I would love for someone to give me a few  pointers on that.

Anyone interested in taking a stroll with me  as I journey through new territory as a writer?  I promise I won't take too much of your time.

Ohh ... once I finish up my org fic for my reverse bigbang ... yes.

(My bang story is due ... ummm ... Monday. And yes it's the one I started last night. But it should be finished today. I'll send you my draft if it at some point today. I think I'm going to just make it a locked dw entry because I'm having computer issues when I try to attact the art in my email.)

I really wish I had time to do this for you, hon, because it's really exciting! But I've bitten off more than I can chew already, and if any of these job applications turns into actual employment, I'm totally screwed.

I'm glad to see Rae is on board, though, so you're in good hands. Looking forward to reading what you come up with!

*dons semi-retired professional author hat, salutes*

Original writer support person reporting for duty. *grin* I do this same thing with several other published writer friends, so feel free to email and ask all the questions. I may not be doing original writing at the moment, that's my project for June, but I'll help you learn the ropes.

*bounces happily at thought of mentoring another writer* Yes, I sometimes think I like doing that better than writing myself.

Yup, that fear hits everyone professional or fandom... you can do it. It may take a while but you can do it.

I'll be waiting for it.

I don't think I have the time or expertise to help you craft it.

But I'd love to see the finished product.

Awesome :) I'd love to read it!

As for fleshing characters out, there is no right or wrong way to do it, just do whatever feels right to you from writing out a biography on note cards, exploring them through writing little ficlets and drabbles...and more.

If you like lists, this one- http://www.charlottedillon.com/CharacterChart.html , is interesting and you can always add to it if you think of other facts you want to add. There is a character resume sheet that I got from a science fiction and fantasy writing book that I'll see if I can upload and post somewhere as I tend use it a lot, but it is very similar to the information in the link I gave you.

This is another interesting site- http://www.novel-writing-help.com

There are tons out there... where do I start? LOL. I'm actually working on compiling a list for my own website.

http://www.figment.com is another great place for finding readers, ideas and more.

Oh... and I'll do a little pimping here- [Bad username or site: @ livejournal.com], great land community where you could flesh out your characters and story in the many challenges offered :P

That is awesome, 'coz I write fiction of my own too, as I already told you!

I don't know how it is with you, but with me, a concept enters my mind. Characters start to appear. I try to tell the story in my mind before putting it into paper - or in this case - Word. But I'm not a professional, far from it, but I'm building courage to send my works to some publisher...someday.

I usually have a general concept of a certain character, and as I write the story, I start to understand the character more- as I am establishing his/her personality.
All in all, I have the whole story in my head - scenes, moments etc... What is difficult is to write all that happens in between, and that is the part where new things come to life and where my characters start to "breath" and "talk" and "think" on their own.

Writing little drabbles of an idea is always good, just like "turnerwolf" said.

And for me, music is a great "assistant". Sometimes I hear a song or music that inspires a moment or a dialogue in the story and I stick to it while writing.

Good fortune to you, my dear Shakespeare! :D
