I had actually forgotten about this challenge (hangs head in embarrassment).  Now that we are officially in hiatus season, this will give me something to do.

Next up on the ipod shuffle...

Black Velvet (click to hear song) by Alannah Myles

I first heard this song a couple of years ago on a weekend trip to Nashville, TN.

My husband and I went down for a weekend with some friends to eat, shop and troll the bars in downtown Nashville.

Now, before you act shocked at me trolling bars - let me explain...

Trolling bars in Nashville is a beast of a different color - it's mostly little dive bars where there's hardly room to walk - but each and everyone one of them have muscial hopefuls singing their souls out in hopes of being discovered.  Some are truly dreadful - others are truly magical.

One of the magical ones introduced me to this song.  I loved the raspy, throaty sound of it and I couldn't get it out of mind all weekend.  It was one of those songs you find yourself singing in the shower, while loading the dishwasher or folding laundry.

As soon as I got home - I went in search of it on itunes.  And while that unknown singer introduced me to the song - Alannah Myles carved a little hole in my psyche and climbed in.

It doesn't really speak to me on personal level - nothing in there for me to identify with - I just like it - alot - and I think alot of that has to do with Alannah's voice and tone for this song.  I have listend to some of her other songs and none of them have appealed to me beyond "oh that's pretty..." but soon forgotten.

This one has stuck with me for a few years and I think it will for a few more to come.

As a matter of fact, I am singing it as I type this.

It stays on my ipod.

300 Violin Orchestra by Jorge Quintero

I couldn't find this on grooveshark, but found it on youtube.

The first time I heard this song, it was being played as a college football team took the field - it took me weeks and weeks to track it down and I am so glad I spent the effort to do so. I like instrumentals and I am very fond of the sound of the violin - this is a wonderful combination of the two.

I love this song - and I always listen to it as I am battling a particular hill on my bike trail - the hill is lung buster, but this song gets me up it.

If you need to get yourself moving and motivated - this is the song to do it.

This song is a keeper

Last Name by Carrie Underwood (click title to hear song)

Back in the day when I watched American Idol, I feel in love with a little country girl named Carrie Underwood. She was sweet, wholesome and could wail out some good ole’ country music.

I remember Simon Cowell saying that Carrie would win AI and would go on to make more records and more money that any idol before her. Simon was right. Say what you want about Simon, but he knows music and he knows the industry – Carrie has been kicking butt musically since the day she won AI.

I am not normally a huge country music fan (I hate a lot of it), but there are a few artist out there that I really like. Carrie is one of them.

I remember the first time I heard this song and the first thing that struck me was the tone of Carrie’s voice – it’s almost like a musical instrument because her vocals blend so well with the actual instruments, and this woman was born to sing country music.

This song is nothing but a good old fashioned fun song with a message – don’t drink tequila and flirt with  cute men at bars because you just might find yourself in…. well, just listen to the song.

I like the song and while it doesn’t speak to me on a personal or emotional level – sometimes a song is just a song and something fun to listen to – pure entrainment.

This song is a keeper.

Bad Moon Rising by Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR) click for song

Written by John Fogerty and preformed by CCR on their album Green River released in 1969.

Creedence Clearwater Revival
Bad Moon Rising
Green River

Lyrics:
I see the bad moon rising.
I see trouble on the way.
I see earthquakes and lightnin'.
I see bad times today.

CHORUS:
Don't go around tonight,
Well, it's bound to take your life,
There's a bad moon on the rise.

I hear hurricanes ablowing.
I know the end is coming soon.
I fear rivers over flowing.
I hear the voice of rage and ruin.

CHORUS

All right!

Hope you got your things together.
Hope you are quite prepared to die.
Looks like we're in for nasty weather.
One eye is taken for an eye.

CHORUS

CHORUS

The first time I heard this song it was in the 1981 movie An American Werewolf in London.

It was played during the lead character’s first transformation into a werewolf.

When I watch that scene now – it seems hokey and cheesy, but I remember being scared out of my wits watching it and at that time the special effects were considered ground breaking. I think the movie even won some type of special effects awards for that scene and for the "decaying friend" make-up.  If you have seen the movie - you know of which I speak.

At the time, I didn’t give the song much thought and if questioned I would have said the song was written for that particular scene as it fit what was happening so perfectly. Here’s a youtube clip of the scene: (sorry, for the link, but “embed” was disabled for some reason)

Fast forward a few years later – I am at a college party and that song comes on – first thing that pops into my mind is that scene from the movie. I must not be the only one because we actually had a (slightly tipsy) conversation about it – that’s when I learned that the song was actually NOT recorded for the movie, but had in fact been around since before I was I born.

I can’t remember exactly when I downloaded the song onto my ipod, but I still get a little rush of nostalgia whenever I hear it and the first thing that still pops into my head is that transformation scene. They will be forever tied together in my psyche.

I still like the song and I especially like the warm fuzzies that I get whenever I hear it. It’s a catchy little tune and honestly – I will have it stuck in my head all night. LOL

This song is a keeper...

{Take the 100 Things challenge!}

I decided a couple of days ago that I wanted to do this challenge, but I couldn't come up with a topic.  Well, I think I have found it - but still not 100% sure.

Last night I went for a bike ride and took along my ipod (helps me to defeat those hills).  I had it on shuffle and there must have been 5 or so songs that I was like "why did I ever download that song?" and thus my blogging challenge was birthed.

For 100 days, I will put my ipod on shuffle and write about that song.  Why I downloaded it when I did - what I think of it now and will I keep it or delete it from my ipod.

This actually helps me accomplish something I have wanted to do for some time - freshen up my ipod.
